Everything You Need To Know About AZ EV Charging Incentives

Electric vehicle (EV) adoption continues to grow in the U.S., and with it comes the ongoing expansion of the nation’s EV charging infrastructure. Last year’s Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) represents the most significant federal climate investment in the nation’s history, and much of its focus is on expanding EV access. Not to mention, the NEVI program and updates to 30C tax credit have made it a great time to get into EV charging—especially in Arizona.

Although EV costs have continued to drop in conjunction with these investments and increased consumer adoption, many consumers still face hurdles in terms of purchasing vehicles and accessing EV  charging infrastructure. The IRA’s extension of the Clean Vehicle Credit of up to $7,500 for many EVs aims to alleviate these cost concerns, but this isn’t the only incentive available to consumers.

Many states offer government and private incentive programs to help with not only buying vehicles but installing or accessing charging networks. In Arizona, EV drivers can take advantage of a number of programs. The state has a unique opportunity to benefit from EV charging. Because many of the world’s sunniest cities are in Arizona, it presents a great opportunity for solar EV charging. Also, the country’s fifth biggest city, Phoenix, has a lot of drivers. That means a lot of emissions, and through widespread ev adoption, those emission numbers hopefully will steadily fall.  Read on to explore Arizona EV incentives and find out if they’ll work for you.

Tucson Electric Power

Tucson residents have access to some of the state’s best incentives through their utility provider, Tucson Electric Power (TEP). The company offers rebates for businesses, multifamily and nonprofit customers that install level 2 and DC fast-charging (DCFC) stations on site.

TEP customers may be eligible for credits for each charging port they install as follows:

  • Commercial, level 2 charger: $4,000 per port, up to 75% of the project cost.

  • Multifamily/nonprofit, level 2 charger: $5,400 per port, up to 85% of the project cost.

  • DCFC (all customers): $20,500 per port, up to 75% of the project cost.

Customers in lower-income neighborhoods may have access to larger Arizona EV incentives with TEP. To take advantage of these credits, you must install at least two charging ports (up to a maximum of six).

TEP also offers rebates based on the amperage level of any charging equipment that customers install. These range from $200 for less than 30 amps to $500 for more than 50 amps.

Salt River Project

In central Arizona, customers of the community-based, not-for-profit water and power utility Salt River Project (SRP) can take advantage of various rebates.

Residential SRP customers can gain a $250 credit toward the purchase of a level 2 EV charger, along with a $50 bill credit for joining the SRP EV Community. Once you have your charging station set up, you can save more by utilizing SRP’s EV Price Plan to charge during off-peak hours. Customers who enroll in the program save an average of 8.6% on their energy bills.

On the commercial side, SRP offers rebates for business customers that install networked level 2 chargers and DCFCs as follows:

  • Networked level 2: $1,500 per port for up to 75 ports.

  • DCFC: $15,000 per port for up to three ports.

Government, nonprofit, school, and multifamily customers are eligible for larger rebates. All chargers must be installed between May 1, 2022, and April 30, 2023.

Arizona Public Services

Arizona’s largest utility provider covers a significant portion of the state, including the Phoenix metro area. It also offers several incentives to its more than 1.3 million residential and commercial customers.

Commercial customers have been able to take advantage of the APS pilot program, Take Charge Arizona. Eligible workplace, fleet, and multi-unit dwelling customers have been able to install and maintain charging stations free of charge or with extensive rebates. As of January 2022, the program’s funds were exhausted, however, so check our EV Connect updates or the APS website for information about any additional funding that may become available.

Also, residential APS customers can get a $250 rebate for purchasing a level 2 charging station, in addition to an $85 annual bill credit for enrolling in the APS SmartCharge Program. Once established, you can enroll in time-of-use plans to save on energy by shifting your charging demand to off-peak hours.

Mohave Electric Cooperative

Customers of the smaller Mohave Electric Cooperative (MEC), a not-for-profit power distribution co-op serving three Arizona counties, can also access significant Arizona EV incentives. MEC offers a $1,000 rebate for residential customers and a $2,750 rebate for commercial customers that install level 2 or DCFC stations.

Other AZ EV Incentives

If you’re not a customer of any of these energy providers, that doesn’t mean you can’t access any AZ EV incentives. A few programs apply statewide. For instance, if you drive a zero-emissions vehicle in Arizona, you may be exempt from regular emissions testing. Likewise, alternative fuel vehicles such as EVs are eligible for a reduced vehicle license tax.

Other local utility companies and agencies may offer additional incentives not included here, and new laws are regularly being passed to add new programs. Check our incentive page and government agencies for more information about Arizona EV incentives in your area. Not only are we an approved vendor registered with many utility providers, but we can also walk you through the application and rebate process. Even better: we help install and continue to help manage your EV charging station throughout these programs. So what are you waiting for? Contact EV Connect today!
